What's
it really worth?
Well,
as the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for."
As
a rule, a free web hosting service is fine for personal sites, but
should be out of the question for professional companies and
organizations.
Why,
you ask? The reasons abound:
-
Free
web hosting services do not support top-level domain names.
You will not be able to get www.yourcompany.com hosted for
free. Instead, you'll get an address like www.thefreehostingservice.com/~yourcompany.
In some cases, the free hosting address is even more
complex. It's much more difficult to promote and bring
traffic to a complex web address.
-
Free
web hosting services often come with unwanted advertising.
The vast majority of free hosting services populate your site with
advertising that may not necessarily have anything to do with your
business. Your website site should be all about promoting your
business, not someone else's.
-
Free
web hosting services often use website templates. In one
respect, website templates are beneficial by allowing anyone (even
a trained monkey) to create a website by just picking some colors
and plugging in some information. But every template has a
limit to how much it can be customized. You may not be able
to display information the way you'd like. And dozens,
hundreds, thousands of websites look just like yours. Would
you want your business logo to look the same as that of a company
down the street?
